I Was There

My senior pic

1985 and I
celebrated in style
with themed parties
every weekend--
Hawaiian, roaring 20s,
even "generic," all the same

trips to the beach and Everclear.
The B-52s roaring from speakers
Rock Lobster and Planet Claire
(I was there)

falling deeper in despair,
a lovesick fool
whose lifeguard boyfriend
stole the very thing
I wanted to keep.

~~

Prompt inspiration~

What a beautiful high school photo. Ya, the senior year so often is the year of parties for sure. And the ending....poignantly sad.

And what is "Planet Claire"?

Thanks, Mary, and Planet Claire was another song of the B-52s...

Thanks, Laurie. I just did a bit of reading about the B-52's. Really never heard of them. And those two songs don't strike a chord with me either. I do see that the group is still touring..

Themes like that still are my favorite kinds of things to do! What a great picture! I can barely remember hair styles from 1985, as I was pregnant with my daughter that year!

Total flash-back for me (Class of '82) Laurie!

Wow, kiddo. Hubba hubba (smiles). This sounds like teen years the way they should be lived - music, fun and pining for some super-jock (we'd run miles from years later). Loved this poem.

Brings back memories even in our part of the world. Senior years are considered honeymoon years! Nicely Laurie!

You were the epitome of the girl next door, the girl of every boy's dream, the all american lass. Love the candor in your words, Laurie!!

You were beautiful, still are. We can all relate to that thief that stole our hearts.

Laurie a great capture of the energy and happenings of that time. Those lifeguards might have saved lives in the water, but they were very dangerous on land...

Great graduation photo and a walk down a somewhat painful walk down the memory lane.

Isn't it like that? The past full of joyful memories and a few regrets. And so we learn that we are who we've been and it's only the present that counts. (or I should say, so I try to learn...) Lovely photo...but even more beautiful woman now, I think.

Laurie--so poignant. Enjoyed it--close to my own experience in '84...
