Poolside Play

Every year in summer’s hot months
housewives swarm like angry
bees, their sting a bitter
look as they watch their kids fall
in the pool, then plop
down into chaise lounges
order adult beverageswith
lemon rind, skim frou-frou
magazines- all the while
ignorant to the wild ruckus
in the waves among
their own unruly kids,
a grasp for eternity

and I have to wonder
ifthey’re mentally subtracting
the days until September. I
watch from the deep end,
shirk the shallow scene as I
swim beside my children, splash
water in their faces and laugh at belly
flops as they jump like cannon
balls of energy, spurn my inner-
child desire to drop
my drawers and moon
those moms.

LOL Moon those moms...haha
I often see such badly behaved children whose mothers simply just ignore it and, wonder how those children will grow up. Loved the images of you with your kids down the deep end and, having fun.
Lovely imagery and, wordle Laurie :)

I love it when I see moms who actually play WITH their kids, as your poem indicates that you do. It is always good, I think, to have an 'excuse' to splash and play, to be a kid again for yet another summer. I enjoyed your write, Laurie.

I had trouble working "subtracting" into my poem. You did it very well - it fits perfectly. Envious. :)

I enjoyed the images of both types of moms. Took me back to many summers poolside.

Your poem reminded me of long ago summers. We didn't have a pool, but we had a full sized aluminum cattle trough we used to keep the garden watered. Several summer afternoons it became the source for water fights (parents vs children, of course). Some of the neighbors joined in, a few stood and watched, shaking their heads. We didn't moon them, but did "accidentally" toss buckets of water in their direction. Thank you for that memory, lol.

Hola! Wonderful poem. As I was reading I was quite astounded at your take on the prompt. Every poet is uniquely a creative facet on the diamond of poetry.

That moon would be especially effective if it involved you AND your kids!

haha do it! SMILES....there is def a disconnect in some families...those that have children for some reason but dont know what to do with them, treating them more an inconvenience....i def love seeing those that play with their children...

Haha, Laurie. That was much needed today. It was fresh and airy, and breathed life into this battered soul. Thanks for this this and the work you've done for our project. Both very well written.

This is hilarious, Laurie!

I think perhaps it is because I did play with my children that I was spurned by the 'housewife' crowd.
I can just imagine the gossip after the 'moon' shines. But then I'd never hear it anyway as I wouldn't be in the same circles that worthless air was traveling. I dislike it when parents don't parent. I'll get off my soap box now.
This was a fun and delightful read.

The echoes of summer afternoons came splashing back. I wonder if those moms would even notice?

Go on and MOON!
You deserve to with this neat poem.

I love "swarm like angry
bees, their sting a bitter
look" and "shirk the shallow scene"
as descriptions of the offending and offensive moms.
