What would you do?

Need advice:

What would you do if your child's teacher told him his at-home project was "pitiful and not worthy of turning in" when you know he tried his very best to draw a picture of a former president on his own? What if this very same child has an IQ of 138 and has been reading since he was 3, but his handwriting and drawing skills are not the best? Yeah...that's what I thought you would say.

I'm so sick of keeping my mouth shut and biting my tongue, but I will attempt to do this for the rest of the year, but once school is out, I can't wait to tell you all we have had to put up with this year from this teacher-who-gets-parents-to-grade-her-test-papers.

I think I would be making a point to let the school board know about this teacher's lack of discretion as well.

What is wrong with this country that teachers think they can just demean a child for whatever reason? (No answer needed here, just something to think about).

I wish you luck on the rest of your son's school year with this so-called teacher. In my opinion, a teacher is not to belittle an attempt at schoolwork, but to help the child improve in areas where needed. Art is not, by any means, one of the more important areas.

I disagree with art not being one of the 'important' areas. It is a form of self expression and when that ability is beaten down so is a child's self esteem. Would you want your writing to be critiqued so harshly.
When my daughters were in public school we had the same problem with an art teacher (she threw my daughter's clay ashtray in the trash. I was livid and had a discussion with her and the principal. Sometimes you have to be a shield for your child in the beginning or things will get out of hand. If your child felt the need to tell you it obviously hurt him deeply.

Here are two e-mail comments I received from friends:

*Honestly, I would like her phone number, so I could express myself in a worthy way. I am so sorry! How sad that the teacher has so little knowledge of how to be the teacher she is paid to be. I would be doing some really hard praying for her. Love you!

*That doesn't sound too good. I have heard another story from my co-worker about having to talk with the teacher and how she words things, making her son scared to go to class. Hang in there.

Wow ~ that is so inappropriate. I would bring this to the principal's attention. I'm sorry Laurie. You've got some great support and advice coming your way. It's great that it was brought to your attention. No telling what else this teacher has been saying to these kids. Maybe its a one time thing, but it's one time too many.
This teacher obviously has problems.
