The Rodeo’s Star

Stiff cowboy dudes popping wrists back in place
Bleached blonde groupies lacking grace

Wearing skin tight jeans and clingy tees
They flock the livestock like irksome fleas

Horse-bucking, calf-roping, bull-riding for show
As the spectators laugh, my jaw drops below

The stands uncover peanut shells and spilt beer
I start to wonder why the hell I’m here

Until the lone clown jump-bumps with a car
Emblazoned amusement, I delight in the star

I'm from a big rodeo town (Reno) but have never attended...did get assigned to interview a bull rider for an article in a local magazine though. Fun poem.

I confess, I'm not a rodeo person. Until they truss up the cowboys the same as they truss up the bulls, I don't think it's fair! Also, Laurie, you know how scared I am of clowns... but this delighted me. Your apt description of the habitues and the crap all over the stands, wondering why you're there. Rodeo clowns are the bravest people in the whole show. They are experts at distraction and very nimble. Nice to see them get some credit!

deft use of clear, concrete details drives this baby home. Well done.

A well defined scene, Laurie, though I am frightened of clowns.
