Dear Barracuda,

A marlin never will my child be
So let him rest, enjoy the sea.

*

A letter to a swim coach who won't let the kids rest for two solid hours; just lap after lap after lap. They need a break, which is why I chose "rest" but play works, too.

Both sketches by Laurie Kolp

Prompt inspiration: Kenia's Wednesday Challenge at Real Toads

This is so charming, Laurie. Your sketches are so graceful, and the words so whimsical.

This is sweet. Sadly, a baby whale died on the beach at White Rock yesterday - trapped in fishing nets. Sometimes it is a dangerous sea.

I enjoyed your poem and drawings

Delightful, Laurie. You are so talented.
I must admit your sketches reminded me of the same thing Sherry mentioned: a young whale died on the beach of my hometown. Humanity can be so cruel to sea creatures, but never you.

Wonderful verse and I so relate to the plea. I really hated seeing ambitious adults pushing kids so hard.

Lovely drawings..I hate that a coach pushes children too hard...success is not in how many laps one can take around the pool...it is in their joy of the swim.

Sometimes coaches seem to forget they are kids!

It's adorable Laurie! And hey, you draw so much better than this woman here! After looking at your drawings, I totally pictured you helping your children with homework, can't explain why!

Thank you so much for participating, I'm so glad you did and even more for you felt like drawing. <3 Kisses!

Hey, you never told me you could draw. How about that. Your marlin is so darn cute.

Sorry about the coach. You're right. They really should get a break. Does he think he is an Olymipic coach or what!

haha...that should say Olympic.
I just can't type today.

I would love to see the intention of this poem expanded into a children's book with your drawings. Perhaps you have already done that and these are two pages of the book? Lovely and powerful plea.
