When misery smacked me
in the face
with demeaning smirks
and words of disgrace
like...
You’re not good enough,
You don’t deserve that!
I looked back at her
and said, NO!
Go away! Scat!
And then turned
my head
the other way,
said, YES!
to happiness
just for today.
A conscious choice
to live my life free,
no longer a prisoner
to the misery of ME.

I love the message in this poem, Laurie -- turning your back on misery and saying YES to happiness! Perfect!
Positive uplifting sassy beat to an absolutely essential cry of freedom. Glorious!
For me "Just for today" is the pivotal line of your poem - misery loves to ruminate on tomorrow and yesterday and you can't give it any wiggle room :-)
saying yes to happiness, that is a beautiful thing...and saying no to the other is def something we have to do or it will hang around....
