Layered

The rolled up sleeping bag, bulky
with coils like boles in a tree
sits beside the trunk, layered
with life essentials for one week-
a week I must resign as parent,
hand over the reins to another.
Hidden within the trunk, a piece
of my heart, my eyes a mist of worry.

you captured it all there the worry of a mother.

Definitely understand the feelings expressed here. Hard to let one's children go out on their own, even for a week!

Laurie, this is the perfect piece of mother. For me the first trip was simply over-night, but a storm came and snow three feet deep-they laughed when they told me they knew how worried I was. I think, all you can do is send them out, knowing you are proud and, as you said, allow a piece of heart to go with them. :)

I remember those days. Amazingly, though my boys are 38 and 40, they still take a piece of my heart with them!

I like the echo..the rolls in the sleeping bag like the rolls in the tree..part of time passing..sadly perhaps..although hopefully for the little one on their adventure..lots of fun..Jae

Love that image of coils like boles on a tree. Used to be on the receiving end of that, kids running to greet the camp counselors...

Oh, I can see why the worry but, they will be fine and have a ball.
When Chloe came back from a week away camping, I swear she bought half the forest dirt on her skin! LOL

Moms tend to worry but they sure can look after themselves. It would do the kids a lot of good to be among peers for a few days. Great write Laurie!

I like this very much. I can feel the tug of the emotions, beautifully left implicit.

You can definitely feel the emotion in the piece. Hope things go well at camp for the little one.

Oh goodness, I'm sure!

Ah, the trials of letting go. One of the most difficult moments in parenthood I think. Very nicely done.

Well written Laurie. Inference and allusion, no direct reference but so very relatable.
