It's About Time

to order the tombstone--
make that a double, says Dad

to mark atop your grave statistics
as if a census

to make this final step,
and then we're done with all we need to do

to admit you're really gone
when we should have had more time

Time is cruel, love is everlasting. Love your words, feel for your heart.

The tombstone certainly makes your loss final. And we always feel we should have spent more time with the loved ones we lost.

Laurie, I have to smile at your dad's "make that a double". I am glad some humor is still available during such hard things as this.

Short but felt it inside. Double up to live to use the time to cherish the great memorĂes.

There's a lot of healing going on in these few lines, Laurie.

And some damn smart poetry.

So touching...yes we always have the feeling that we should have had more time ...only when they are gone!

This is so well penned, Laurie: "and then we're done with all we need to do" really resonated with me.

Taking care of the practical, doing what needs to be done...so hard, when feeling so much...

time does have that elusive quality, i agree; when we think we have done what we should, then retrospect steps in highlighting, oh you know we didnt really have all that time we thought at all

much love...

When we're done with all we need to do jumped out for me....and the last line. To be with those we love while we can is all that really matters.

A poignant observation, Laurie. That is why it is so important to make the most of every precious second, while there is still time to do so...

Laurie, a straight to the heart write. It seems the time in life when I and all my friends are in the same place. It's a difficult place to be. Hugs to you :-)

The best kind of poem - the kind that says it in so few words - but says so much. I just posted a blog about my dad and 'the end,' also...
