The Belly Dancer

Kalama dances with fear,
every swift move of the hip
a slap on sweaty cheeks.
Bystanders gather ‘round
the flaming torch, hypnotic
eyes and mouths are 'O's.
Wafting smoke lifts all
doubt lulls anxious hearts
who believe in The Power
with gifts of gratitude.

Wow. It really makes it seem like some sort of ritual. Great write.

The move from Kalama's fear to the bystanders' belief in The Power is striking. It leaves me feeling unsettled. Well constructed.

Lovely line break here:
"Wafting smoke lifts all
doubt lulls anxious hearts"
