Going through Mom's closets |
Much like the well-known wardrobe
in the old spare room, this closet sits
waiting for visitors... and I am Lucy
stepping into another place and time;
not Narnia, but Kelly High, stepping
back to my youth, back to party days
with formal dances and bright futures.
Each gown worn still hangs there as if
nothing ever happened, nothing at all.

Very good poem, Laurie! Family objects do send us back in time, to the days when so much was yet to be lived and we can suddenly experience those feelings again even if very fleetingly 'as if nothing had happened'.
I understand this very well, Laurie. It is so hard to go through the closets of a loved one after they are gone. We do feel, I think, that we are entering a time warp....and that the person we know still lives there somehow, as long as the closet exists. We know we must clean them out, but it is so - so hard.
a different wardrobe where time stands still and takes one into the youthful and pleasant past..a wardrobe full of remembrance with mother's touch...a beautiful poem Laurie...
And some people keep scrapbooks! How she must have enjoyed this particular history. Tis wonderful to have pictures with this sweet poem.
I still have part of a closet like that from my daughter's high school days. I can't bear to throw out or recycle the gowns and dance costumes it holds. They are just waiting there it seems for another dance.
Loved the Wardrobe connection to stepping into another world.
A little reflection of every heart, the closet of forgotten dreams, lost hopes and hidden desires. Perceptive and well done.
luv the mystery, and your words add the history; have a nice Wednesday
much love...
A sense of timelessness mingled with the awareness of its transience. Beautifully penned. Loved it.
It's nice that you're writing about this Laurie. Maybe it makes it a little easier.
Please accept my belated condolences. I was away from blogging for a while, and haven't visited your blog. Take care.
Wow, I would so love to have any mementos from those high school days. My fire wiped out any treasures , and a later flood all the photos of that time. Bittersweet to find your past lined up in a closet, kiddo. Sigh.
Oh yes all those gowns--I have some myself that will someday be in some thrift store no doubt.
My mom still keeps all of her stuff including the children clothes ~ I can relate to the cabinet full of party days & bright futures ~ Hope you are well Laurie ~
It's like a time machine, isn't it, Laurie? Old clothes can become associated with many memories. Nicely written!
Love this closet "waiting for visitors" - a fun take on your very cool prompt, Laurie.
i love the way a dress can bring the memory of a whole day spent in it back in a flash!! what an apt poem!! :)
Sure,it is treasure! Especially if mom kept it...~ Thanks for sharing, Laurie. Much Love :)xx
Yes, just like Narnia. Well done Laurie.
Clothes can indeed take us to another time... My mom's 80s and 90s outfits seemed so cool to me the first time I saw them! I just wish I could live those days... Wonderful, Laurie!
true that the clothes worn in youth will take you back to good old carefree days..like time travel..:)
Oh, the things we treasure!
I know this closet well.
Oh yes... so familiar.
we move on...but there roadmarks stay stuck in those places...there is a underlying heaviness to this as well....the as if nothing ever happened....could be that something happened to change it...or it could be you were waiting for something to happen and it never did....
