Post-Dental Plea

Mylanta get to work real fast
My stomach pass
Don’t hesitate
This burn won’t wait

No, Tylenol is what I need
For throbbing teeth
A jaw that squawks
At chewing, balks

A dentist trip, swallowed spit
Upset my pit
My jaw, my teeth--
I need relief!

**
I hate going to the dentist, but had to this morning. I still hurt.

WOW!

WOW
paid me a visit
in the form of
AH-HA,
a stealthy
OOH
and wondrous
AAHH,
without an
UH-OH
or a negative
TSK
no up and down looks
nor judgemental hiss;
just WOW
by itself
as I rambled along,
took note of the day
with my glasses on.

Caramel

Anticipation,
a burst
of pure caramel,
sweet goodness
down
my throat
pure ecstasy,
my love affair
with you.

Clandestine Excuses

Sick Woman, 1665, by Jan Steen
Photo prompt courtesy of The Mag 138

the same old story every week
headaches, chills, lethargy

he thought she might be terminal
so he gathered docs and clergy

unaware a secret kept
stuffed within her pillow

made her ill, recondite truth;
she'd rather be with Willow

Happy Labor Day

Long deserved rest for the working individual
Always willing to lend a hand despite data
Believed to be true; an unemployment stab
Omitting the fact most of us do our share, so
Remember to honor this day, remember

Dads, moms, sisters, brothers, friends; likened
Allies join together to unwind, relax on the sofa
You, yes you deserve a break from labor today

*This is a double acrostic poem. I wrote one for Memorial Day and posted it (here) on my other blog, Bird's-Eye Gemini.

College Apartments

Clanky
hanky-panky
flashing opinions
like cymbals clashing. I
hear the echoes, smell
the beer, hide from the fear
with college textbooks
as reading pleasure while I
lie alone on the lawn
bikini clad and covered up
drinking in the atmosphere
away from the rumpus
ruckus at the pool
away from the dissent
having spent
my childhood years
in disaccord, discord,
feeling discarded.

A Stockade of Lies

Puddle, 1952, M. C. Esch

Eschew the truth; frightening
how you scrutinize others'
minor faults, lightening
your own guilt, how it smothers

feral flames spreading.
A tempest through life’s blazes
you think your future, dreading
puzzle pieces lost, mazes

through which you run, blockading
eternal wisdom, accrue
lies upon lies stockading
distrust from truth you eschew.

What's That Called?

Sometimes I feel fragmented
even quite demented
at a loss for…
words
names of things, I call absurd.

Like instead of eye and needle,
I spit the word “eedle.”

My dogs, Snowy and Jake-
I’ll combine and call them “Snake.”

Even my own children
think I’ve gone delir(ious)-en
when I slither through the chicken
looking for some kitchen.

What about ewe? Does this happen, 2?

Royal(ty) Rendezvous

House At Dusk, 1935, Edward Hopper

Ramble down the accordian path
past the window where I sit
past the lamppost
past the House of Hopper.
Perambulate into the woods, wait
past dusk, my love. I'll meet you there.
A plethora of pleasure will come.

Bad Neighborhoods

You were forewarned
not to go, not to go, not to go
into that neighborhood
but you did anyway.

Did you hear the beggar
on the street corner
calling out to you,
“I ain’t got nothin’
no new clothes
my shoes have holes
and my rat’s nest of a house,
it’s too small for my family.
Help me, help.”

Help me
Help me

Or did the whiskey woman by the bar,
strutting her stuff with confidence,
catch your eye when she bragged
about being 40 and better than you?

Better than you
Better than you

What about the peddlers in the park?
Did they tell you you’re not good enough,
that your art sucks, go away?

Go away
Go away

I told you not to go there
that neighborhood’s dangerous.
Why don’t you come to the beach
and relax with me?

A Path of Cherry Pits

Why is it we find ourselves
victims of tumultuous times

where peace is privileged,
laced with turgid truths
as thick as throbbing tongue?

An amaroidal aftertaste
these nauseating lies
promises forsaken

spit like cherry pits
leaving a path that treads
on troubled tactics.

When will this relay end?

A Farm in the City

A garden grows in the front yard
Of the gray house down the street.

The front yard, the front yard
Oh, yes, the front yard!

Tomatoes, corn, beans, squash
Sectioned off with marsh cane
Bean poles and chicken wire

Chicken wire, chicken wire
Oh, yes, chick, chick, CHICK-
EN! wire

Two chairs, a rickety table
Where an ashtray sits.
Rumor has it the man
lost his high-paying job

lost his job, lost his job,
Oh, yes, he lo-st his job

needs money for a loan,
his wife and kids left him
last week; but I think he’s
lost his wet-brained mind

Lost his mind, lost his mind
Oh, yes, he’s lost his MInd

farming in the big city
like that, don’t you?

How I Roll

The problem is
I want my shoulder back
the one I used to

roll back and forth
lift up and down
shimmy Charo style

without a kink or spasm
that stops me in my tracks
like an Indian sunburn

and I want it back yesterday
not a year or two from now
because that’s just how I roll.

IMHO, Don't Take It To the Bank

I pace the floor back and forth, back
to the back window, forth. The sun a splash

of golden light, dust dancing in the wings
as birds tweet their morning melodies

my sweet children sit in a desk for four
hellacious hours, coloring in the right

answer, I hope, but I really don’t care
because this test, this *STAAR* test

is like the government, not run by
lobbyists, though, but by textbook

companies, I bet you $50.00 that’s
the truth hiding in Texas’ balanced budget.

It’s all about the money MON-EY, it’s all about
the money; not the fresh air of childhood

that breezes through school in a floral
springtime bliss, or the dryer’s pacifying

whir as I stir about like a mother hen
looking for answers in the sky.

**I changed it up a bit. I'd love to know which one you like better.

I pace the floor
back and forth,
back to the back
window, and forth.
The sun a splash
of golden light
dust flecks dancing
in the wings
as birds tweet
their morning melody

my children sit
in a desk for four
hellacious hours,
coloring in the right
answer. Check it once
twice, thrice; but
don’t read or draw
or blow your nose
lest you disturb

the air of childhood
breezing through the school
a floral springtime bliss.

I pace the floor
back and forth,
back to the back
window, and forth

and look to the sky for answers
as money blows through the trees.

Inside Me

Inside me lives
A rumple of emotions
A lover
Wife, mother, sister, daughter
Passionate and caring
Sometimes too much

Inside me lives
Secrets that I’ve kept
For too long
Truth blooming like tulips
A forever battle
Between faith and fear

Inside me lives
A survivor
With a tainted past
An unknown future
Living in today
With dependence on God

Your Wake

The trail you leave
weighs heavy
in my mind-
an anchor
falling
to the bottom
of the sea.
I reach for you
try to stop you
so close
and yet so far-
your touch
a mirage.

A Renga of Toads

Grace O'Malley over at Imaginary Gardens has urged us to create a renga poem.

The renga is a long Japanese poem, a series of very short verses in an alternating pattern, built by the group. There are links and references scattered within the greater poem, and each verse is related without being repetitive, writes Grace.

I am the fifth person and here is what I've written:

her graceful waves in
a risque spring ballet, legs
kick the silver sky

Don't Come Looking for Respect

Rhetorical is the question - may you
Enter? - Why of course. Not. You’re
Standing at the front door like a
Pompous ass- has it been that long?
Even the neighbor’s dogs remember how
Callous you are. What? No respect?
Truth is, you’ll never earn it from me.

No Ordinary Pacifier

A wooden pier, a stick
ClankClankClankClank
only it’s a baby, a Blow Pop
ClankClankClankClank
against the bumpy wall
he drags it, then pops it
on his purple lips, licks it
because it’s too big for his mouth
lick, lick, lick
and it falls to the floor and breaks
I wonder what he’ll do
he bends down, examines the sucker
as if it’s a bug
gives the candy to his oblivious mom
who wipes his hands, gives him
a red Blow Pop this time
looks at me and says
it keeps him quiet
