It Started with This

It started with just a tiny sip
of daddy's frothy mug at six
never to be forgotten
that craving, yearning
until she was spiraling
out of control
bonging kegs
snorting coke
hospitals
mixing prescription drugs
cocktails
rehab
forgery, theft
jail
more drink
more drug
too much
not enough
streets
unreachable highs
insanity
uh-oh, caught again
prison
halfway house
                      (will she surrender?)
one trip with bath salts
a smoke of K2
morgue
.
.
.

It started with just a tiny sip.

Well, you nailed the reality of a lot of folks, Laurie...

So sad because it is reality for so many caught in the spiral.
Raw and real.

Too much truth there. I have a nephew in prison because of drug use. It's so sad and such a waste.

Gads Laurie! This is sobering...

This poem packs a punch, Laurie. I do think that some people are more genetically prone to addiction than others. Addiction 'catches' some immediately. It is obvious that the person in this poem was one of these people. You captured reality well.

So sad and so real.

Very honest observation - it does start with the first sip.

One long downward spiral... sad...

This is really at the extreme end of the spectra, but still refreshing (and sobering) in a very scary way! Beautiful!

Sadly, we hear of this happening too many times. Sure is a lot of suffering in this world...

You paint a sad picture of one that didn't make it. Very sad.

I never took the sip, but I was always afraid of just this spiral. I guess that's good since it kept me out of trouble :) My addictive personality manifests itself in FOOD instead.

I haven't written my poem yet (working on it), but the opening lines are similar. An addict is an addict is an addict....

Thanks for the writing! twinkly
